Background of the study
Academic library support services for students with disabilities in Oshimili South have garnered increasing attention as institutions strive to create inclusive learning environments. Libraries are pivotal in ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities, have equal access to academic resources. In recent years, academic libraries have implemented adaptive technologies, accessible digital content, and specialized support programs tailored for students with disabilities (Brown, 2025). These initiatives include screen readers, Braille resources, and assistive software that facilitate an inclusive research environment (Smith, 2023). Moreover, ongoing training programs for library staff on disability awareness and inclusive practices further support the integration of these services into the academic framework (Adams, 2024). Despite these advancements, challenges such as inadequate funding, technological constraints, and limited awareness of available services persist. This study critically appraises the effectiveness of academic library support services, examining how these initiatives are tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities and identifying potential areas for improvement to foster a truly inclusive academic culture.
Statement of the problem
Students with disabilities in Oshimili South face persistent challenges in accessing academic library services, despite the introduction of specialized support initiatives. Many students report difficulties in navigating library systems due to insufficient adaptive technologies and limited staff training (Smith, 2023). The gap between policy intentions and actual service delivery exacerbates the challenges faced by these students (Adams, 2024). Inadequate funding and outdated technological resources further hinder the effectiveness of support services, reducing their impact on academic success. As a result, students with disabilities are often at a disadvantage compared to their peers, underscoring the need for a comprehensive evaluation of current library support services and the development of targeted improvements (Brown, 2025).
Objectives of the study
To assess the adequacy of academic library support services for students with disabilities.
To identify challenges in the delivery and effectiveness of these services.
To propose strategies for enhancing accessibility and support for students with disabilities.
Research questions
How effective are current library support services in meeting the needs of students with disabilities?
What challenges do these students encounter in accessing library resources?
What improvements can be made to enhance library accessibility for students with disabilities?
Significance of the study
This study is significant because it addresses the critical issue of accessibility in academic libraries for students with disabilities. The findings will help inform policymakers and academic institutions on best practices and necessary improvements, ensuring that all students have equal access to educational resources (Smith, 2023; Adams, 2024).
